Stephen Curry reacts to LeBron James joining 76ers, Warriors face uncertain future
Stephen Curry has commented on LeBron James’ decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers, a move that has prompted reflection on the Golden State Warriors’ unsuccessful pursuit of the four-time champion. James’ choice ended months of speculation, with the player signing a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers, including a player option for the second season. This agreement will see James enter his 24th NBA season, with the potential to extend his career further.
The Warriors were among the teams actively pursuing James, with many believing that pairing him with Curry would maximize the final years of Curry’s career. Warriors’ Future Without James
The failure to acquire James adds to the uncertainty surrounding the Warriors’ future. The team will once again rely on its veteran core, a challenge Curry acknowledged, especially after injuries to Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody impacted the previous season. “The through line, which is hard on anybody in this situation, especially with us keeping this thing together, is knowing that when Jimmy [Butler] got hurt and Moses [Moody] got hurt, the whole calculus of everything changes,” Curry explained. “How do you get through their absence and still stay at a certain level? And then how that goes into this year. It’s the same deal. So, I’m a realist on that.”
Warriors insider Tim Kawakami suggested that owner Joe Lacob might be shifting focus towards the team’s future beyond Curry, rather than committing entirely to one final championship run. Kawakami stated on the TK Show, “What Lacob wants to do, and this might get Warriors fans mad. He wants to build the next team after Steph Curry.”
Curry, at 38 years old, continues to perform at an elite level, averaging 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds across 43 games last season. He also maintained strong shooting percentages: 46.8% from the field, 39.3% from three-point range, and 92.3% from the free-throw line. Despite his individual performance, injuries and a lack of roster depth contributed to the Warriors finishing 37-45, placing 10th in the regular season before being eliminated by the Phoenix Suns in the Play-In Tournament.
Curry’s Realism and Team Challenges
Curry’s objective at this stage of his career is to win and have the best possible team assembled around him for a deep playoff run. He remains careful in his public statements but acknowledges the realities of the team’s situation. He does not share the public frustration of some followers, indicating an awareness of the behind-the-scenes dynamics and what was genuinely feasible for the Warriors.
The team’s current reality includes challenges such as Butler’s $56.8 million expiring contract, which has not attracted significant trade interest, and the team’s reluctance to trade all available first-round picks unless it guarantees contention. Curry noted, “I’m hopeful for all the creative ideas of getting the best team possible. We had those conversations. But when you have injuries at the top like that, it’s always gonna change.”
The Warriors’ hopes for a late playoff push depend on their experienced squad remaining healthy for the postseason. Curry played 43 games last season, and the team missed the playoffs after losing to Phoenix on April 17.
