Ducks secure Carlsson with record deal

Ducks secure Carlsson with record deal
The Anaheim Ducks have confirmed their decision to match the Philadelphia Flyers‘ five-year, $90 million offer sheet for center Leo Carlsson. This agreement ensures Carlsson, 21, will remain with the Ducks through the 2030-31 season. The contract carries an average annual value of $18 million, which is noted as the highest in NHL history.
Carlsson indicated that accepting the offer was a straightforward choice. He stated that it was an offer many would sign, and that his team understood his decision.
Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli released a statement, shared by NHL insider David Pagnotta, confirming their support for the move. They attributed the ability to retain Carlsson to General Manager Pat Verbeek‘s strategic management of cap space. The owners expressed high expectations for Carlsson, believing he will continue to develop into one of the league’s elite centers and contribute significantly to the community.
Impact of the Carlsson contract
The new contract follows a productive season for Carlsson, who recorded 29 goals and 67 points in 70 regular-season games. He also contributed 11 points in 12 playoff contests. His performance was part of a season where Anaheim finished with a 43-33-6 record and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.
General Manager Pat Verbeek commented on the implications of the rising salary cap, noting that teams will need to adapt their business strategies moving forward. The decision to match the offer sheet was considered essential, as replacing a top-tier first-line center like Carlsson would have been challenging.
Carlsson’s retention is seen as crucial for Anaheim’s rebuilding efforts. Verbeek emphasized that Carlsson has been viewed as a franchise player since the 2023 draft and that matching any offer sheet was always the team’s intention.
The team’s focus now shifts to roster management, as the Ducks face limited cap flexibility and have other contracts to finalize. While some veteran players could become trade candidates, keeping Carlsson ensures the core of the team remains intact as they aim for consistent contention for the Stanley Cup.
Carlsson’s 67 points led the Ducks in points per game at .96 and placed him second in overall points, goals, and power-play points, where he recorded points. He also tied for second in assists. In 12 Stanley Cup Playoffs contests, he registered points.
The current offseason has seen an increase in offer sheets, which are influencing the league’s landscape. The rising salary cap and a scarcity of high-impact free agents have made offer sheets a more prominent tool for acquiring talent, particularly for up-and-coming players. This trend has led to teams taking proactive measures, including trades, to avoid potential offer sheet scenarios for their restricted free agents.
The St. Louis Blues successfully used offer sheets in summer 2024 to acquire Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg from Edmonton. This summer, several players were considered potential offer sheet targets due to their teams’ cap situations. Carlsson’s five-year, $18 million per year deal makes him a highly paid player in the league, a situation that has generated considerable discussion within the NHL.
The contract positions Carlsson to potentially secure another significant deal at 26. Carlsson’s 29 goals were a career best, as were his points and assists, and he achieved a +4 rating in the 2025-26 season.
