Teams pitch LeBron James through agent as contract offers emerge

As the primary free agency period in the NBA concludes, several teams are positioning themselves to sign LeBron James, with specific contract offers now understood. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Miami Heat are considered leading contenders, though the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Denver Nuggets also remain possibilities.
Teams are reportedly making their pitches to James indirectly through his agent, Rich Paul, by sending voice memos that are then forwarded to the player. James has not held in-person meetings with any teams.
Contract Offers and Team Dynamics
The contract offers vary significantly among the interested teams. The Cleveland Cavaliers could offer James either a $6.1 million tax midlevel exception or a $3.9 million veteran minimum, contingent on James Harden‘s contract situation. The Cavaliers are expected to finalize a multiyear deal with Harden, who declined his player option, but are waiting on James’ decision to determine if they need cap flexibility.
The Miami Heat could offer up to $7 million. This amount would allow them to add another player on a minimum deal, as they are currently hard-capped at the first apron after the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade and have approximately $10.4 million available with 10 players under contract.
The Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Philadelphia 76ers are currently limited to offering a $3.9 million veteran minimum. The Warriors, however, could potentially create a scenario to offer James around $6 million by trading Moses Moody and re-signing Draymond Green to a contract between $20-22 million annually.
The Philadelphia 76ers, despite recent signings of Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons, and Ariel Hukporti, which leave them with only the $3.9 million minimum, have enhanced their roster with the acquisition of Jaylen Brown. The 76ers also benefit from being in the Eastern Conference, which is seen by some as a less challenging path to the NBA Finals compared to facing teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs.

Agent Rich Paul Discusses Philadelphia’s Appeal
Rich Paul, James’ agent, recently discussed the appeal of the Philadelphia 76ers on the “Game Over” podcast. When asked if Tyrese Maxey was the main attraction for James joining the 76ers, Paul affirmed that Maxey would be a significant draw. He highlighted Maxey’s positive impact on the organization and his consistent performance, noting that he has never seen Maxey play 48 minutes without smiling.
Paul also mentioned the allure of playing alongside Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown as additional factors for James considering Philadelphia. Bob Myers, a Philadelphia 76ers executive, also appeared on the podcast to make a direct plea to James, stating that he believes Philadelphia offers James his best chance to win.

The Denver Nuggets face a challenging situation, being approximately $12.7 million away from hitting the second apron and having five open roster spots. Peyton Watson remains unsigned as a restricted free agent. The Minnesota Timberwolves are working to reconfigure their team by swapping out Julius Randle and Naz Reid for LaMelo Ball, and have also signed Ayo Dosunmu to a new deal. The Timberwolves‘ potential is linked to Anthony Edwards, and the health of Ball, along with Dosunmu‘s continued strong play.
There is currently no indication of when James will announce his decision, and a number of unsigned free agents are reportedly waiting for his choice before finalizing their own contracts.
