MLB trade deadline approaches with potential player movement
As the August 3 MLB Trade Deadline nears, discussions around potential player movements are intensifying. Several trade ideas have been proposed, involving teams looking to bolster their rosters for a playoff push or to strengthen their future prospects. These proposals are not currently under official consideration by teams but offer insights into possible transactions.
One proposed trade involves the Seattle Mariners and the San Francisco Giants. The Mariners could acquire Casey Schmitt, an infielder/outfielder/designated hitter, and left-handed pitcher Erik Miller. Schmitt is having a strong season and can play multiple positions, which would address Seattle’s need for a right-handed bat. Miller would add a left-handed power arm to the bullpen. In return, the Giants would receive right-handed pitcher George Kirby, who is arbitration-eligible and controllable for 2 1/2 more years. This move would help the Giants replace left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray, who is expected to be traded.
Another idea suggests the Boston Red Sox acquiring catcher Hunter Goodman from the Colorado Rockies. Goodman is controllable through 2029 and arbitration-eligible next year, and his offensive output has been notable this season, particularly in road games. The Rockies, in turn, would receive left-handed pitcher Connelly Early, right-handed pitcher Kyson Witherspoon, shortstop Marcelo Mayer, and catcher Carlos Narváez. Early is currently on the injured list but is expected to return this season, while Witherspoon is a 2025 first-round pick. Mayer, a 2021 first-round pick, could benefit from a change of scenery, and Narváez would provide an everyday catcher for the Rockies.

The San Diego Padres might consider acquiring right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets. Peralta has had a challenging season with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.438 WHIP before the All-Star break, and he is a free agent at the end of the season. The Padres, known for their pitching development, could aim to help Peralta regain his previous form. The Mets would receive left-handed pitching prospect Kash Mayfield, the Padres’ first-round pick in 2024, who recently participated in the Futures Game.
The Chicago Cubs could target right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha from the Kansas City Royals. Wacha, who made the AL All-Star team this year, is controllable through 2027 with a team option for 2028 and has maintained sub-4.00 ERAs over the past five years. This acquisition would provide the Cubs with a veteran starter. In exchange, the Royals would receive infielder/outfielder Matt Shaw and outfielder Kevin Alcántara. Shaw can play multiple infield and outfield positions, while Alcántara is having a strong season in Triple A.
Infield and Batting Title Considerations
The Texas Rangers could look to add infielder/designated hitter Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants to improve their offensive production. Arraez has won batting titles with three different teams from 2022 to 2024 and is having a strong season both offensively and defensively. He is known for making consistent contact and creating RBI opportunities. The Giants would receive left-handed pitching prospect Dalton Pence and infielder Yolfran Castillo. Pence, a 2024 11th-round pick, has shown impressive numbers at various levels, and Castillo is a young infielder from Venezuela who has played at two different A-ball levels this year.
As the deadline approaches, teams like the Detroit Tigers and the San Diego Padres are also subjects of speculation regarding their key players. Discussions include whether the Tigers will trade ace Tarik Skubal and if the Padres will move closer Mason Miller, despite their position in the Wild Card race. The New York Mets’ David Stearns is considered a critical figure in this deadline period, and the Washington Nationals must decide on the future of a significant player.
