Ryan Garcia to defend WBC welterweight title against Conor Benn in Las Vegas

WBC welterweight title bout
Ryan Garcia is set to defend his WBC welterweight title against Conor Benn on September 12 in Las Vegas. The fight, which will be Benn’s first world title challenge, is scheduled to take place at T-Mobile Arena. Garcia, a prominent figure in boxing, previously secured the WBC 147lb belt by defeating Mario Barrios in February with a dominant decision that included a first-round knockdown.
This championship defense marks Garcia’s third time headlining a card in Las Vegas. His previous appearances in the city include a loss to Gervonta Davis in 2023 at T-Mobile Arena. The upcoming fight is promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions for Garcia, while Benn is promoted by Zuffa Boxing president Dana White.
The event is scheduled during the Mexican Independence Day weekend, a period typically associated with major boxing matchups in Las Vegas. Historically, this weekend has featured fights involving Mexican icon Canelo Alvarez, who last year headlined at Allegiant Stadium. Alvarez is slated to fight Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title, though the date for that matchup, originally set for September 12 in Saudi Arabia, has not been finalized. Garcia’s fight with Benn will be the second welterweight title bout in Las Vegas within a three-week span, with WBA champion Rolando Romero defending his title on August 22 against Teofimo Lopez, also at T-Mobile Arena.
Benn’s path to title challenge
Conor Benn, a Briton, enters this fight as the WBC’s top welterweight contender. His journey to this title shot has involved significant matchups and a move back towards the welterweight division. Benn suffered his first professional defeat when he was outpointed by Chris Eubank Jr. at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He later secured a decision victory in a rematch against Eubank Jr. in November, dropping him twice during the bout.
Following his middleweight contests, Benn returned to welterweight competition. He defeated former 140-pound champion Regis Prograis at 150 pounds on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s comeback fight in April, also held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Benn has not competed at the welterweight championship limit of 147 pounds since 2022. His ambition is to emulate his father, Nigel Benn, by winning the WBC belt.

Benn has expressed his singular focus on achieving a world title. He previously stated that he is in a comfortable position in life, but his work has become more relentless and purposeful, with increased intent. He aims to win the world title, a goal he shares with his father, who also held a world title.
Fighter remarks and recent form
Ryan Garcia, who has engaged in verbal exchanges with Benn in recent months, reacted to the fight announcement by stating, “This one is for Mexico and the UK. Both want his a** clipped. Clout demon will be slayed.” Garcia, a Victorville, California native, previously experienced an upset loss to Rolando Romero, the WBA world champion, last year. However, he rebounded from that defeat by dropping and outpointing Mario Barrios in February to claim the WBC 147lb belt.

Rolando Romero had claimed an interim version of his title last May with a decision victory over Garcia in New York. The upcoming bout between Garcia and Benn is expected to be a significant event in the boxing calendar, with both fighters having recently competed and expressed their intentions for the welterweight title.
