New Format and Streaming Partnership

The 2026 Home Run Derby is scheduled to begin on Monday at 8 p.m. ET, marking a significant shift in its broadcast and format. For the first time, the event will be streamed exclusively on Netflix, moving away from its previous carrier, ESPN, which had aired the competition since 1993. This partnership with Netflix has also led to a restructuring of the Derby’s rules, departing from the clock-based system used since 2016.

Under the new format, each of the eight participants will receive 20 swings in the opening round. Unlike previous years, a round will not conclude on a home run, allowing hitters to continue until they make an out. Time is no longer a factor in determining the end of a round. The top four tallies from the opening round will advance to the semifinals, where players will be seeded based on their first-round totals. The semifinal and final rounds will each feature 15 swings. Tiebreakers in the second round will be decided by three-swing overtimes.

The new rules aim to simplify the viewing experience by removing the frenetic final seconds and complex bonus balls. This change is expected to reduce reliance on the batting practice pitcher’s quality and allow for a less chaotic competition. However, some observers note that without a time limit, there is a theoretical possibility that the pace of play could slow down if hitters choose to delay their swings.

The Competitors and Venue

The 2026 Home Run Derby will take place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The field features a diverse group of players, including a hometown duo and several young talents. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, both from the Philadelphia Phillies, are participating, marking the first time teammates have competed in the Derby since 2018. Harper previously won the Derby in 2018 as a member of the Washington Nationals, while Schwarber made his third appearance in the event.

Schwarber leads MLB in home runs with 32. Other notable participants include Ben Rice of the New York Yankees, who has 29 home runs, and Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays, with 28 home runs. Caminero, at 23 years old, is making his second Derby appearance after finishing second last season. Jordan Walker of the St. Louis Cardinals, aged 24, is making his Derby debut and has 22 home runs this season. Harper, Munetaka Murakami of the Chicago White Sox, and Willson Contreras of the Boston Red Sox each have 20 home runs. Jac Caglianone of the Kansas City Royals rounds out the field with 15 home runs.

Citizens Bank Park is known for its high home run output, particularly for left-handed sluggers. The tall wall in right field could influence some left-handed hits, encouraging players to focus on elevating the ball. The event will feature a range of throwers, including family members and coaches. Ben Rice’s father, Dan Rice, a former pitcher for Brown University, will be pitching to him. Harper’s batting practice will be thrown by Dino Ebel, the Dodgers‘ third-base coach, who also pitched to Schwarber in a previous All-Star swing-off. Schwarber’s thrower will be Rafael Peña, the Phillies’ assistant hitting coach, while Contreras will have José David Flores, the Red Sox interim bench coach, throwing to him.

The broadcast will feature a wide array of analysts and hosts. Elle Duncan will serve as the lead sports host for Netflix, with Matt Vasgersian providing play-by-play commentary and Lauren Shehadi reporting from the field. Retired players such as Barry Bonds, Hunter Pence, Anthony Rizzo, and CC Sabathia are expected to be part of the coverage. Albert Pujols is also slated for studio commentary, having previously participated in Netflix’s Opening Night coverage in March. Pre-event coverage for the Home Run Derby will begin at 7 p.m. ET.

The 2026 Home Run Derby is scheduled for Monday, July 13.
