Ryan Blaney secures Cup Series overtime victory in Atlanta

Ryan Blaney secured a dominant victory in the weather-delayed NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta, emerging from a three-wide battle on the final lap of overtime. The Team Penske Ford driver led 171 laps after starting from the pole position. The race concluded early Monday morning at EchoPark Speedway.
Blaney’s win came despite a late brush with the wall, which caused potential damage to his right side with 29 laps remaining. He reported a “terrible” vibration to his crew after being cut off by Bubba Wallace. Despite this, Blaney remained on the track, a decision that ultimately led to his victory. His crew chief, Jonathan Hassler, stated that viewing photos of the car’s right side helped them determine that staying out was the best strategy to win, especially with many cars still on the lead lap and few laps remaining.
Race Dynamics and Delays
The race experienced a significant delay of 3 hours and 9 minutes due to rain and lightning. This weather interruption occurred after lightning was detected within eight miles of the 1.54-mile oval track, prompting NASCAR officials to halt the race and advise fans to evacuate the grandstands. Rain began shortly after the delay was announced. The race eventually resumed at 12:02 a.m., concluding at 1:45 a.m.
During the delay, Blaney reportedly took a nap and ate, while other drivers, such as Kyle Larson, noted the late resumption was past their usual bedtime. The weather delay marked the first caution for cause in the Cup Series race, contrasting sharply with the previous weekend’s race, which saw a track-record 13 cautions in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series event.
Blaney won both the first and second stages of the race. He faced challenges from Wallace and Christopher Hill on the final lap, with Carson Hocevar and Ty Gibbs rounding out the top four finishers. However, Wallace was later penalized for passing below the double yellow lines, resulting in a 29th-place finish instead of second.
Team Penske’s Strong Performance
The race showcased a strong performance from Team Penske. Blaney’s pole position start was complemented by his teammate, Joey Logano, who also started on the front row. Another Team Penske driver, Austin Cindric, moved into third place early in the race, highlighting the team’s early dominance with their Fords.
Team Penske drivers have consistently performed well at the Atlanta track, having won Stage 1 in six of the last eight races there. Blaney’s victory further solidifies this trend. Tyler Reddick, who had won at EchoPark Speedway in February and secured five wins in the season’s first nine races, qualified 31st but quickly moved up to fourth by the 35th lap, demonstrating his continued competitiveness.
Other notable finishes included Cup Series points leader Denny Hamlin, who qualified 28th and finished 12th, and Chase Elliott, who finished 13th. Elliott’s car featured a baseball-themed design as part of his Design to Drive program with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, which has raised significant funds over its nine years.
Multiple drivers, including Kyle Larson, Chase Briscoe, and Riley Herbst, were involved in a wreck with five laps remaining, which led to the overtime period. The Cup Series is scheduled to move to North Wilkesboro, N.C., next weekend.
