Jamie Morris reacts to Warde Manuel stepping down as Michigan athletic director
Michigan enters period of transition
Former Michigan Wolverines running back Jamie Morris has commented on the university’s athletic department entering a period of transition. This follows Athletic Director Warde Manuel‘s decision to step down from his role. Morris, who played alongside Manuel at Michigan, shared his reaction after the university announced that Manuel will leave his position at the end of the year. Manuel is set to become a special adviser to President Domenico Grasso.
The announcement comes after an independent review by the law firm Jenner & Block. This review examined the athletic department’s culture following the dismissal of former football coach Sherrone Moore due to what the university described as an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
Findings of the independent review
The review found no current employee had direct, contemporaneous knowledge of the relationship involving Moore. However, it did identify broader concerns within the athletic department. These concerns included issues related to accountability, organizational structure, reporting systems, and fears of retaliation.
University officials have stated their intention to strengthen the independence of the athletic department’s compliance office. They also plan to expand human resources support and create confidential, independent resources for student-athletes to report personnel concerns. Grasso noted failures in accountability, structural deficiencies, weaknesses in reporting and support systems, and concerns about retaliation.
Grasso emphasized that significant work is needed to restore Michigan athletics to its standing as a model program both on and off the field. He also highlighted that the review did not find widespread misconduct throughout the department. Instead, it identified weaknesses in accountability, organizational structure, oversight, and reporting that created conditions where misconduct was not always addressed consistently, promptly, or in accordance with university expectations.
Morris reflects on Manuel’s tenure and future
Morris believes that Michigan’s leadership is changing course during a pivotal time for the university. He stated, “We need a new president also; we need new ideas from everybody. If not going with Warde is the thing they want to do, I’m sure Warde stepped aside and said, ‘OK, we can go in another direction.’”
Despite recent controversies, Morris defended Manuel’s time as athletic director. He cited accomplishments such as a football national championship and key coaching hires in both football and men’s basketball. Morris remarked that Manuel will be remembered as one of the great athletic directors in Michigan history.
When asked about controversies during Manuel’s leadership, including the football sign-stealing scandal and issues in other athletic programs, Morris indicated that challenges facing college athletics extend beyond a single administrator. He noted, “This doesn’t just happen at Michigan. This happens at every university. The NIL, they’ve got to get a hold of the NIL. This is bigger than Warde Manuel.”
Morris described Manuel’s continued role as a special adviser as a transition designed to provide continuity. This arrangement allows the university time to search for new leadership. He explained, “It’s called a transition. The new president needs to come in and get comfortable. It’s going to be that president that’s going to have to hire that athletic director because they’ve got to work together.”
Looking ahead, Morris suggested that Michigan should seek an athletic director with experience navigating the business aspects of modern college sports, including name, image, and likeness rules. He stated, “It’s a business now. You’ve got to bring in a business-conscious type of person that understands the whole NIL.” The university has not yet announced a timeline for selecting Manuel’s successor.
Manuel will remain as athletic director until the end of the calendar year.
