Michigan AD Warde Manuel’s future uncertain amid buyout discussions

Discussions Around Manuel’s Future

Warde Manuel, the athletic director for the University of Michigan, is reportedly in discussions regarding a potential buyout. Two individuals familiar with the situation confirmed these talks on Tuesday, July 14. Despite these discussions, an insider indicated that Manuel’s departure is not expected to be immediate, stating that details are still being determined.

Manuel himself addressed his future during a scheduled interview on WTKA-1050 on Tuesday morning. He did not explicitly deny that discussions had taken place. The day before, he informed Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports that there were no plans for him to cease being the athletic director in the near future. Manuel acknowledged having several conversations over recent months about future opportunities and potential directions, but stated he was not entirely certain about where things would lead.

The discussions follow an oral presentation last month to the regents, president, and attorneys regarding findings from a nearly $12 million investigation conducted by Jenner & Block. This investigation looked into the athletic department’s culture and information known about former football coach Sherrone Moore’s affair with his then-executive assistant, Paige Shiver.

Investigation Findings and University Stance

The investigation was expanded after the incident involving Sherrone Moore, aiming to assess the athletic department’s culture. While the university has achieved significant athletic success and financial improvements during Manuel’s decade-long tenure, it has also faced multiple scandals. These include two NCAA investigations into football, a former football coach being fired and investigated by the FBI, and issues concerning other sports programs.

An insider suggested that the current situation is more a result of the investigation’s findings leading to a mutual agreement for separation rather than Manuel being tired of the controversies. The insider noted that while Manuel cannot be held accountable for every individual’s actions, the accumulation of issues under his leadership necessitates a resolution.

Manuel stated he had not seen a physical report from the Jenner & Block investigation. Reports indicate that no physical report has been presented to anyone, including the Board of Regents, the president, or the university’s attorneys, who received an oral briefing last month. Manuel was briefed separately.

A university spokesman, Paul Corliss, stated that documents related to these attorney-directed investigations are privileged and confidential, protected by attorney-client privilege. This confidentiality is maintained to preserve the integrity of the investigative process, protect privacy, and safeguard individuals from potential retaliation.

Upcoming Regents Meeting

The University of Michigan Board of Regents is scheduled to meet at the Delmar Hotel in Traverse City at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. The official meeting agenda does not include discussions about the athletic department investigation or Manuel’s future. However, regents have the ability to propose subjects for consideration and action at the last minute.

President Domenico Grasso holds the responsibility for hiring and firing the athletic director, not the board. Manuel’s comments from the radio interview, where he dismissed social media rumors about his firing, were reposted by Regent Sarah Hubbard. A livestream of the upcoming meeting is expected to be available.
