Ryan Blaney closes in on NASCAR points lead after dominant Atlanta performance

Ryan Blaney is now 65 points behind the NASCAR points leader following a strong performance at EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, Georgia. His victory, which was delayed by weather, has positioned the Team Penske Ford driver as a contender for the points championship.
Blaney demonstrated significant control throughout the Cup Series race, leading 171 laps after starting from the pole position. This lap count is notable, marking the most laps led at a drafting-style track since Richard Petty led 184 of 200 laps during his first Daytona 500 win in 1964. The race itself experienced a delay of 3 hours and 9 minutes due to rain and lightning, concluding early on Monday morning.
Dominant Performance and Strategic Decisions
Blaney’s dominance was evident from the start, as he secured the pole position with teammate Joey Logano alongside him on the front row. He proceeded to win every stage of the race, including Stage 1 and Stage 2, and ultimately prevailed in a three-wide battle during the final lap.
Despite brushing the wall with 29 laps remaining, Blaney’s crew chief, Jonathan Hassler, made a critical decision to keep the No. 12 Ford on the track. Hassler quickly assessed that the damage was not severe, a risk that ultimately paid off. Blaney noted a “terrible” vibration after the contact, but the team’s quick evaluation allowed them to maintain their position and strategy.
Blaney acknowledged the speed of his car, which allowed him to recover even if he briefly lost the lead. He described his car as “incredibly fast” and capable of defending moves without resorting to low-percentage blocks. This speed proved crucial in navigating challenges from competitors.
Championship Implications and Upcoming Race
The win propelled Blaney to third place in the NASCAR points standings, placing him 65 points behind leader Denny Hamlin. Tyler Reddick currently holds the second position. Blaney expressed surprise at how close he is to the championship lead, indicating that the points situation can change rapidly.
Blaney’s strategy going forward is to “just keep doing what we’re doing.” He believes that winning the championship is not “out of the question” and emphasized the importance of maintaining their current performance. The next event for the NASCAR Cup Series is scheduled for next Sunday, July 19th, at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina.
In the same rain-delayed race, Cole Custer, driving the No. 41 Sysco/RaceTrac Chevrolet, secured a 17th-place finish. Custer started in 33rd position and steadily advanced through the field despite battling a tight-handling car in the initial stage. He finished Stage One in 28th.
The extensive rain delay, which lasted over three hours, affected track conditions, causing Custer’s car to become loose. He finished Stage Two in 31st. However, the No. 41 team made continuous adjustments to the car’s balance throughout the final stage. Custer capitalized on a strong overtime restart, gaining eight positions in the closing laps to achieve his 17th-place finish. This result marked Custer’s best Cup Series performance at the track since 2022. Race coverage for the upcoming event at North Wilkesboro Speedway is set for 7 p.m. ET on TNT.
